Aretha Franklin – The Queen of Soul – RIP

Ms. Aretha Louise Franklin was an American singer and pianist.

She began her career as a child singing gospel at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan

Aretha Franklin was born in Memphis, TN. and died in her hometown of Detroit, Michigan on August 17th, 2018.

She was the Queen of Soul. A passionate, feisty, and at times, a difficult diva; she blazed a trail for the many women that came after her, especially women of color.

My mom shared the name “Louise” with Aretha. Growing up, she saw much of herself in the burgeoning star. She would mimic her style, and try to recreate her flourishes. Her love of Aretha (and all things Motown) was passed down to me and I will forever be grateful for that.

She will never be replaced.

She will never be forgotten.

A famous and favorite performance. At the 1998 Grammys, she filled in last minute for Luciano Pavarotti who was sick. Nailing the famous opera composition Nessun Dorma perfectly!
